Gabriel Chamé Buendia

Bio

He is a theatre artist with a national and international presence. Actor, clown, playwright adaptor, director, teacher, and theatre producer, his work extends across Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

In Argentina, he worked as an actor and assistant director with the Argentine Mime Company, directed by Ángel Elizondo, a disciple of Étienne Decroux. The company staged seven productions that were censored by the military dictatorship.

He was a founding member and actor of the legendary Clú del Claun, a theatrical clown company that toured Latin America and Spain, presenting its innovative artistic vision.

In Europe, he works as a director, theatre researcher, and teacher in institutions such as RAW Berlin-Friedrichshain, the Theatre Institute of Seville, J.C. Corazza Studio, Laboratorio Layton, Estudio 3, Cristina Rota School, and Gabriel Chamé Buendía Theatre Studies in Madrid; as well as L’École Nationale du Cirque de Rosny-sous-Bois, Le Samovar, La Cascade, and L’École de la Comédie de Saint-Étienne in France. He also carries out his work in various cities throughout Latin America.

Among the productions that stand out in his extensive European career as an actor and director are:

Among them are A Season in Hell (Arthur Rimbaud), Ubu Roi (Alfred Jarry), The Green Bird (Carlo Gozzi), Tout va Vian (Boris Vian), The Maids (Jean Genet), The Summer Trilogy (Carlo Goldoni), The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Love’s Labour’s Lost, and The Winter’s Tale (William Shakespeare). He also performed as a clown in Quidam by Cirque du Soleil, which toured extensively throughout Europe.

Among his international creations, the solo performances Llegué para irme (I Arrived to Leave) and Last Call stand out. Also notable is Othelo. It Ends Badly, a unique reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy that remained on stage for ten consecutive years (World Theatre Award 2013).

In collaboration with the company Les Nouveaux Nez, he premiered Triiio: 154 Years of Experience in France in 2016.

He adapted and directed Cymbeline (Shakespeare) at the Comédie de Saint-Étienne, France, in 2019.

He co-directed Bonobos at the Lola Membrives Theatre in Buenos Aires (2019–2022) and at the El Nacional Sancor Seguros Theatre (2023).

He directed The Hole X at Espacio Ibercaja Delicias in Madrid in 2021.

His productions have been presented at renowned venues such as the General San Martín Theatre (Buenos Aires), the National Cervantes Theatre (Buenos Aires), the National Theatre of Costa Rica, the Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the Avignon Festival, Vidy-Lausanne (Switzerland), and Teatro El Matadero (Madrid). His work has also been showcased in Barcelona, Seville, Cambridge, Mexico, Colombia, the Canary Islands, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, and many other locations.

In 2021, he published his book The Pulse of the Present. For a Clown, Going from Point A to Point B, the Straight Line Is the Worst Path (Atuel Editions, 2021).

In 2023, at the Buenos Aires Theatre Complex, he presented Measure x Measure by W. Shakespeare, adapted and directed by the Othelo Argentina team.

In 2024, he toured with his productions Othelo (It Ends Badly) and Measure for Measure (It’s Your Fault), performing in Madrid (Teatro Español), Uruguay (El Galpón Theatre), and Bogotá (FIT Festival), among other venues. 

In 2025, he co-directed the production A Shitty Christmas alongside Verónica Llinás and Peto Menahem at the Premier Theatre in Buenos Aires.

He tours internationally with the production Measure for Measure (It’s Your Fault), performing at the Chekhov Festival in Moscow. 

In Spain, the production is presented at Teatros del Canal in Madrid, the LAVA Festival in Valladolid, Badajoz, Temporada Alta Barcelona, and the FIT Festival in Cádiz.
